Frequently Asked Questions – DCS Lithium Batteries

What happens if I completely discharge my DCS battery?

If a DCS LFP battery is fully depleted, the Battery Management System (BMS) will activate a protective shutdown by opening the battery terminals. This removes resistance in the system and prevents damage to the cells.

To wake up the battery:

  • The BMS requires a 12V signal with at least 1A of current to "wake up."

  • Most modern lithium-compatible chargers and solar regulators will initiate a slow recovery charge to wake the BMS.

  • If your charger cannot wake the BMS, connect an unregulated solar panel directly to the battery terminals (ensure all loads are disconnected).

Important: The battery should never be left in a fully discharged state as this will result in irreversible cell damage. Always integrate a low-voltage cutoff system to prevent full discharge and follow the storage procedures in the user guide.

What is Active Cell Management?

DCS batteries use Active Cell Balancing, a method that redistributes charge among individual cells during charge and discharge cycles. This ensures:

  • Maximized available energy

  • Increased battery lifespan

  • Reduced risk of thermal runaway and cell degradation

Unlike passive balancing, which dissipates excess energy as heat, active balancing efficiently moves charge from high to low cells in real time.

What is the best way to store my DCS battery?

For long-term storage:

  1. Fully charge the battery to 100%.

  2. Disconnect all loads and chargers.

  3. Store for a maximum of 3 months.

  4. Perform a full discharge and recharge cycle every 3 months (at least 4 cycles per year) to maintain cell health.

What battery monitor settings should I use?

Use these settings when configuring external battery monitors:

  • Charged voltage: 14.0V

  • Tail current: 4%

  • Charged detection time: 1 minute

  • Peukert exponent: 1.05

  • Charge efficiency: 98%

  • Current threshold: 0.1A

  • C-rate: Based on your battery’s capacity (e.g., 1C for 100Ah = 100A)

Can I use a voltage-sensing relay (VSR) between different battery chemistries or capacities?

No. VSRs connect batteries in parallel, which can cause:

  • Uneven charging

  • Accelerated degradation of both batteries

For example, pairing a 60Ah lead-acid battery with a 120Ah AGM or lithium battery via VSR will damage both packs over time.

Solution: Use a DC-DC charger, which isolates the two systems while safely transferring energy from the starter to the auxiliary battery, regardless of chemistry or size.

If both batteries are identical, can I use a VSR?

Yes, but lithium batteries have a unique voltage curve. You must use a programmable VSR to dial in the correct parameters.

Alternative: For simplicity and efficiency, connect the batteries in parallel and use a load disconnect (e.g., Victron Smart Battery Protect) to safeguard against over-discharge instead of relying on a VSR.
